Although accomplished in oil and watercolor, erectile Flattmann has become best known for his work in pastel. In 1987 Watson Guptill published his book The Art of Pastel Painting. His work is also the subject of two additional books; Alan Flattmann’s French Quarter Impressions and The Poetic Realism of Alan Flattmann. A new book, medical An Artist’s Vision of New Orleans: The Paintings of Alan Flattmann, is due out next spring.
As well as receiving numerous awards and honors during the course of his career, Flattmann has been featured in numerous art books and magazines such as Plein Air, American Artist, The Pastel Journal, Pastel Artist International, Watercolor, Southwest Art and the French magazine Pratique des Arts. His work has also been shown in over 60 solo exhibitions and included in major group exhibitions in the USA, France, Spain, Columbia and Taiwan. In addition, his paintings can be found in the public collections of: The Butler Institute of American Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Oklahoma Art Center, Longview Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Art, Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, St. Tammany Parish Justice Center and Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation.
Hosted by Fondren Renaissance and art enthusiasts Jan & Lawrence Farrington, the September 5 Juried Show at The Cedars will welcome submissions from all over the state in various mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, glass and wood.
Each artist may submit up to three works in any medium and cash awards will be given for first, second, third and fourth places; first place receives $1,000 and all accepted work must be available for sale.
The opening reception is September 5, 5pm until 8pm and the show will hang through September 30 at The Cedars, 4145 Old Canton Road.
