http://www.jackson.k12.ms.us/departments/curriculum/publications/SupplyList_K-2.pdf
getting ready for back to school is a costly endeavor whether it's a child's first day at the local elementary school or heading back to college for the final year of college. while expensive for all parents, for some the purchase of supplies places only a momentary strain on the budget but for many that strain can throw that budget out of kilter for months to come, especially in these uncertain financial times. families who have never had to give second thought to providing basic supplies will this year join ranks those parents for whom the choice of food or composition books is no stranger.
while there are numerous channels for you to make your donations toward meeting this need, fab encourages you to participate in our local community effort. purchase extra supplies when you are buying for your own children. no children, then take a walk down your own memory lane and head to the store pretending that you are in the 5th grade again and need to get all those items the teacher told you that you needed in your desk at all time.
when you have loaded up your shopping cart and made your purchase, then bring them to fondren after 5 with you and leave them in the trolley on downing. we will get them to local school children. we promise. |

Sweet Potato Queens™ Coming to Fondren
The weekend of March 23-27, 2011

It's official: Fondren will be the home to Jill Connor Browne's Sweet Potato Queens™ the weekend of March 23-27, 2011. That's after a vote of overwhelming support from Fondren businesses today in a morning meeting of the Fondren Association of Businesses. Browne was on hand to ask if Fondren could and would support a four day weekend of plans to include a kids fest, mob dance, big hat luncheon, and Zippity Doo Dah Parade™, among other things. While the Queens' ball and other fundraising activities will remain at the Hilton on County Line Road, the annual Mal's St. Paddy's Parade downtown had just "gotten too big" according to Browne, adding "it was our fault."
Browne's concern also stems from making sure the recipient charity, Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, gets the most out of fundraising efforts. Since the early 90's, Queens from all over the world, as far away as Saudi Arabia and Indonesia have been coming to Jackson for the events. Browne says they identify strongly with support for the charity. And they love Jackson. She says when they come here, they spend money, and that's good for the local economy.
There had been plans in the works to move the parade to Ridgeland, but Browne says "we couldn't do all we wanted to there." Fondren business owners were enthusiastic about the ideas Browne proposed, saying they will work over the coming months to "bring this all together."
